The Dante Alighieri Society and its Norwegian chapters

The Dante Alighieri Society was founded in 1889 by a group of intellectuals led by Giosue' Carducci and it was appointed as Moral Entity with R. Decree of 18 July 1893, n. 347. As it is stated in the decree, the Society's objective is "to protect and spread Italian language and culture in the world, reviving the spiritual ties of compatriots abroad with their mother country and nurturing love and worship for Italian civilization among foreigners".

Currently, the Society has more than 400 chapters all over the world, spread in about eighty countries. There are 7 chapters in Norway, of which Røst is the northernmost in the world.
