A new eruption (the ninth since December 2023) is underway in the area around the Sundhnúkar crater on the Reykjanes Peninsula, near the town of Grindavík. The fissure is approximately 700 meters long, and the lava is moving primarily in a southeasterly direction.
The tourist sites of the Blue Lagoon and the Grindavík campsite have been evacuated as a precaution.
Due to the wind, polluting gases generated by the eruption could spread to Reykjanesbær, Vogar, Sandgerði, and Garður.
The Icelandic authorities have also reported that the high temperatures of recent days have caused an increase in stream flow, particularly in the highland areas.
They therefore advise checking road conditions before traveling. It is recommended to avoid restricted areas and to constantly monitor the information available to travelers and residents provided by local authorities on the website/app www.safetravel.is, on the Icelandic Civil Protection website http://www.almannavarnir.is/english/ and on the volcano monitoring website: https://icelandicvolcanos.is/.
It is also advisable to stay informed, including through the media, about the weather (http://en.vedur.is/) and road conditions (https://www.vegagerdin.is/en; https://umferdin.is/en), and to always adhere to the measures issued by local authorities during your stay.
