Italian Navy and NATO vessel Alliance: arctic research campaign High North 18

The NATO vessel Alliance, which had left the port of Tromsø on 7 July, concluded the “HIGH NORTH 18”, a research campaign (marine geophysics) taking place in the Arctic between Norway and Greenland.

The mission was conducted by the Italian Navy, with the scientific coordination of the Navy Hydrographic Institute and thanks to renewed synergy with the NATO Maritime Research and Experimentation Center in La Spezia (NATO STO-CMRE) as well as the collaboration with leading research institutions both Italian (CNR, ENEA, OGS, INGV, ERI) and international (Sorbonne University of Paris and Norwegian FFI) and with representatives of Italian industry (e-GEOS and IDS).

“High North 18”, which follows the last year’s campaign, is part of the Italian Navy’s commitment in the Arctic region and is the natural continuation of the previous missions with the aim of consolidating and further developing scientific research in particular in the study of climate change in areas of particular interest.

The Alliance is a NATO research vessel, operated by the Italian Navy for the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) based in La Spezia (Italy). The Alliance is a complete research vessel able to conduct both naval research (such as submarine and mine detection, sonar and weapon trialing) as well as a wide range of activities in hydrographic and oceanographic research. The Alliance, as the new Norwegian polar research ship Kronprins Haakon, is built by the Group Fincantieri.
