The new mission of the vessel ‘Alliance‘ has begun, the Italian Navy and NATO vessel that will operate in the coming months between the North Atlantic and the Arctic, in one of the world’s most important strategic and scientific settings.

On June 19, the Alliance reached Reykjavik, Iceland, where it will soon be a key player in Task Force X-Arctic, an innovative NATO program for monitoring the maritime environment. The mission’s objective is to develop new capabilities to understand and monitor the Arctic, a maritime space increasingly important for environmental and international security reasons. The numerous researchers, technicians, and specialists from various international organizations aboard the Alliance , along with personnel from the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), will test emerging technological solutions and autonomous monitoring systems.

In the second half of July, the Alliance will participate in the tenth edition of the “High North/Arctic Climate Observatory” scientific campaign, dedicated to studying the marine environment and climate change in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard. This year, for the first time, the campaign will be conducted by the Italian Navy Hydrographic Institute and a team from CMRE.

The Alliance  is unique: owned by NATO, it has been operated by the Italian Navy since 2016 and is used as an experimental platform for oceanographic research. The 2026 expedition confirms Italy’s central role in international maritime research and in supporting the Atlantic Alliance’s activities, combining technological innovation, scientific knowledge, and security in one of the most fascinating and strategic frontiers of the 21st century.
