Due to the emergency measures and the country’s lockdown, the Italian Government has decided (Law Decree no. 18/2020) that the validity of Italian ID documents that are expired or are due to expire from March 17, date of the entry into force of the Law Decree, onwards will be extended. Pursuant to article. 104 of the Law Decree the validity of the documents (including passports and identity cards) is extended until 31.08.2020 but for the purpose of personal identification only. The expired documents are therefore not valid travel documents.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, in application of art. 103 of the same Law Decree, has decided that the validity of Italian driving licenses expiring from 31.01.2020 will be extended until 31.08.2020.
The extension of the Italian documents will be formally communicated to the Norwegian and Icelandic authorities. If you should experience problems as the recognition of the validity of these documents is concerned, please contact the Italian Embassy writing to consolato.oslo@esteri.it.
