Ambassador Stefano Nicoletti visited Tromsø on the occasion of the “Arctic Frontiers 2023” conference, the main event on both political and scientific issues related to the Arctic. In addition to the participation in various sessions on geopolitics and international cooperation in the Arctic, the program of the visit included a meeting with the management of the Norwegian Polar Institute, and a visit to the icebreaker for polar research “Kronprins Haakon” – supplied to the Norwegians by the Italian company Fincantieri in 2017.
During his visit to Tromsø, the Ambassador met with the Mayor of Tromsø, Gunnar Wilhelmsen, the Director of the Arctic Council, Mathieu Parker, the County Governor of Troms and Finnmark, Elisabeth Vik Aspaker, and the Rector of the University of Tromsø – UiT, Dag Rune Olsen, with the aim of speaking about the presence of Italian students, academics and researchers at UiT.
Ambassador Nicoletti also visited the monument erected in memory of Umberto Nobile and the fallen of the polar expeditions. Inaugurated in 1969, the monument was recently restored by the Municipality of Tromsø, thanks also to the financial contribution of the Italian Embassy in Oslo.
The visit included a meeting with the Italian community residing in the city, located beyond the Arctic Circle, together with the local representatives of Comites.
