Iceland: Volcanic activity south of Stóra-skógafell, in the Svartsengi area

Svartsengi

The vulcanic eruption that started last week south of Stóraskógafell, in the Svartsengi area, is still ongoing. The town of Grindavik has been evacuated. Icelandic authorities are constantly monitoring the area, where several eruptions have already occurred in recent months. There are currently no plans to increase tourist access to the eruption site, as dangerous toxic gas leaks can occur.

It is recommended to avoid prohibited areas and to constantly monitor the information provided by the local authorities on the website/app www.safetravel.is, on the Icelandic Civil Protection website http://www.almannavarnir.is/english/ and on the website dedicated to volcano monitoring https://icelandicvolcanos.is/

It is also advisable to always keep up to date on the weather (http://en.vedur.is/) and road (http://www.vegagerdin.is/english) situation, and to always rely during the stay to the measures given by the local authorities. For any information on the status of your flight, please check with the relevant airlines. Updates are also available on the Keflavik International Airport website: https://www.isavia.is/en/keflavik-airport
