A new volcanic eruption is underway in the area around the Sundhnúks crater on the Reykjanes Peninsula, near the city of Grindavík, in the area already affected by the eruptive phenomena of the past months.
The eruptive fissure is moving south towards Grindavík, where the evacuation of the inhabitants is underway. The city of Grindavík, the area and the surrounding roads have been closed. The Blue Lagoon tourist site has been evacuated and temporarily closed as a precaution. Due to the wind, the polluting gases generated by the eruption could also spread to the capital Reykjavík.
It is recommended to avoid prohibited areas and to constantly monitor the information available to travellers and residents provided by local authorities on the website/app www.safetravel.is, on the Icelandic Civil Protection website http://www.almannavarnir.is/english/ and on the website dedicated to volcano monitoring: https://icelandicvolcanos.is/
